Survey the scene.

It’s the first step to almost any intervention. This enlightening survey of female rad onc trainees—with a notable response rate of 74%—can be summed up in a word: isolation. Almost one-third are training in an environment with one or no female co-residents and two or fewer female attendings, so it’s not surprising that over half feel a lack of mentorship has thwarted career aspirations. But it’s not all bad news. Resident physicians have learned to embrace long distance relationships to build a national community for female radiation oncologists through the creation of the first organization of its kind, SWRO. | Osborn, Int J Radiat Oncol Biol Phys 2019
