August 22, 2017. This weekend marked the 70th anniversary of the articulation in a German court of a certain set of rules the international medical community agreed should govern the future of human studies worldwide. The Nuremberg Code, as it has since become known, hinges on human subject voluntariness and a prerequisite understanding of risk. Advancements in oncology largely depend on clinical trial data, which wholly depend on our patients’ trust and willingness to participate. While this code does not wield the rule of law in any nation, it remains a crystallized reminder of ideals we must actively bear in mind lest risk slipping into circumstances akin to those necessitating that fateful court hearing seven decades ago.
