Hospitals are notorious for asking patients for charitable donations, particularly those of the wealthy variety. Apparently, there are no official laws or even guidelines against healthcare systems accessing patients’ financial records to aid in effective targeting—but no one’s ever asked the patients how they feel. It’s no shocker that <7% of surveyed cancer patients found this practice acceptable, meaning the “ethical” guidelines here probably need revamping. | Jagsi, JAMA 2020
