HIFU Voodoo.
With ever-improving abilities to visualize prostate cancer, more focused treatment techniques have come into vogue. Enter high intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU), which is pretty much just what it sounds like. Or as WedMD would put it: ”If you've ever used a magnifying glass to reflect the sun's rays and start a tiny fire or burn a hole into a leaf, you already have an idea of how HIFU works.” In this prospective study of 75 men with mostly intermediate risk disease, HIFU was found to be quite harmless to nearby organs at risk...and to nearby cancer cells with over 40% of follow-up biopsies revealing active tumor 6 months out from treatment. | Mortezavi, J Urol 2019
