Effective public health requires a public voice. Twitter can provide such a microphone to individuals with name recognitions big and small. This thought-provoking analysis measured the social media impact of the nearly 100 researchers presenting at the largest academic health services meeting who also had Twitter accounts. While Twitter users were evenly split between genders, women wielded significantly less influence, on average having half the number of followers, primarily due to a huge gap in males following female accounts. | Zhu, JAMA Intern Med 2019
