Lest we forget, this article describes the origins of open perineal prostate biopsies as a form of cancer screening at a Columbia NYP affiliate hospital. It was, of course, first tested on New York’s most vulnerable male population that doctors could find at the time: Homeless WWII veterans on the streets of the Bowery district, the namesake of what what would later become known as the Bowery series, were offered shelter and three meals a day in exchange for their perinea.
