Electronic medical records (EMR) may be the bane of your work life, but perhaps their powers can be used for good. In this fascinating feasibility study, individual level genomic data was linked to longitudinal clinical info readily available in the EMRs of 275 oncology practices across the country. Honing in on the roughly 4K patients with non-small cell lung cancer, associations between genomic characteristics and demographic and clinic outcomes were spot-on with previously reported prospective studies. As were associations between tumor mutations / mutational burdens and response to therapies. TBL: A coordinated effort to link genomic and EMR data across disease sites and zip codes could open the door to unprecedented oncologic understanding. | Singhal, JAMA 2019
