Bright idea.

Top Line: While breast MRI is uncommonly used for screening, it may help refine risk assessment.
The Study: This population-based study assessed the risk of future breast cancer in women found to have increased background parenchymal enhancement (BPE) on a screening or diagnostic MRI. Importantly, this study did not include women getting breast MRI after a diagnosis of breast cancer, so it’s hard to know how this may apply to uninvolved breasts in that population. They found that the extent of BPE was associated with risk of invasive breast cancer, independent of other risk factors such as breast density. In fact, BPE predicted breast cancer risk even in the setting of breast density, an already recognized independent risk factor. In women with dense breasts but low BPE there was no significant increase in risk of cancer, while in women without dense breasts but high BPE there was an increased risk. Finally, having dense breasts and high BPE resulted in a higher risk than either factor alone.
Bottom Line: Background parenchymal enhancement on breast MRI is associated with increased risk of future breast cancer. | Arasu, J Clin Oncol 2019
