Top Line: Breast tomosynthesis is a new way of doing screening mammography.
The Study: Conventional mammography squishes the entire 3D breast into a single plane to produce two X-ray views. With tomosynthesis, a limited range X-ray arc (~50 degrees) produces several planar reconstructions of the breast. The thought is that this provides a more detailed view of the breast to improve sensitivity and accuracy of breast screening. Beginning in 2010, Swedish women were prospectively asked to participate in the Malmo Breast Tomosynthesis Screening Trial (aka MBTST). Every third woman was offered tomosynthesis versus conventional screening. In contrast to previous studies, this trial used one-view tomosynthesis alone rather than in addition to routine mammography meaning it cost less time and radiation exposure. Single view tomosynthesis increased breast cancer sensitivity from 60 to 80% and increased the absolute number of cancers detected from 6.5 to 8.7 per 1K people screened.
