Even rad onc departments can use one. This award-winning abstract presented at this week’s annual ASCO Palliative and Supportive Care in Oncology Symposium demonstrates the feasibility and effectiveness of a rapid-access multi-D bone met clinic. MDACC instituted a protocol where patients with bone mets were seen within 48 hours of referral by both rad onc and ortho with a tentative simulation scan and treatment of 8 Gy x 1 scheduled on the day of their consultation. Compared to historical controls of patients palliated with 8 Gy x 1, the 23 patients treated per protocol were seen in consultation 3x faster at an average at 3 versus 10 days from referral. More remarkably, they completed treatment within an average of 5 hours from time of consultation compared to 7 days prior to protocol.
