A large claims database linked with state cancer registries confirms conventional wisdom: patients with oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma have comparable survival with either upfront radiation or surgery. In fact, the only decipherable difference in outcomes per upfront treatment was rates of transient feeding tube use—though in the end this ended up related to chemo more than anything.
