ASCO has new online guidelines for appropriate HPV-testing of head and neck tumors. They endorse p16-staining as a reliable (and relatively cheap) surrogate for HPV-status, but only if performed directly on the primary tumor or an involved node in a patient with oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) and only if there is at least 70% p16-expression of at least moderate intensity. They even go so far as to state pathologists should not assess HPV-status of tumors arising anywhere outside the oropharynx. | Fakhry, J Clin Oncol 2018
