July 13, 2017. The myopia epidemic is real. Rates of nearsightedness in the U.S. have doubled over only two generations. And in areas of East Asia, the rate among teenage men is a staggering 96.5% (yes, that decimal is in the right place). Though conventional wisdom holds that myopia is written in your DNA, contemporary reports have shown strong associations with education levels--more specifically, book work. More novel data, however, has shown an inverse correlation with amount of time spent outdoors and rising rates of nearsightedness. It is most likely that the reasons behind the recent surge in myopia incidence are multifactorial...but maybe it’s not so bad if recess if your kid’s favorite subject.
